follow me: home older stories submit article cv i am an experienced online journalist and political editor working for trinity mirror papers in the west midlands and the north east, based in the parliamentary press gallery at westminster. i understand how government, parliament and political parties work . i am equally at home digging out stories from data, social media or interviews as i am covering major set-piece events or explaining how things work to readers. i produce content which is shareable and promote my work on social media . my experience with content management systems and knowledge of html allows me to include charts, embedded content from third parties and formatting in my work, to create content which encourages interaction and keeps readers on the page. contact me at this email address is being protected from spambots. you need javascript enabled to view it. (but please send press releases to my work email at this email address is being protected from spambots. you need javascript enabled to view it. as this is the email i monitor during working hours). explainers opinion polls showed the snp was likely to win a lot of seats in scotland, while snp leader nicola sturgeon said she hoped to influence the policies of the next government. my article who are the snp and why do they matter to england? explained who nicola sturgeon was, why the snp was important and four things the snp hoped to achieve as partners in a uk government . to liven it up i included a chart showing the results of a recent opinion poll in scotland and an snp video . i also added an on-site poll to encourage interactivity , which helped to drive shares, as well as two items created by other people within the business - a poll of polls and election countdown graphic - to encourage readers to stay on the page a little longer. other examples of my work include a series of explainers setting out what you need to know about the general election on may 7 . quirky stories this story about ukip's bizarre claim that cycle lanes discriminate against old people because cyclists tend to be young did well. other examples include the candidate who claimed to be part of the local community on a giant poster - but spelt community wrong . the retiring mp who told the house of commons his constituents were rude - and the pay was too low . and a story about labour leader ed miliband saying james bond should be played by a female actress also did well. he made the comments in a radio interview and we got hits from it by getting it online quickly. for this story i identified actresses who could play the part, sourced some photos, added a poll asking readers who they felt should play bond and promoted it on social media . data journalism this story (part of a daily general election roundup) used data to illustrate how the parties focus on marginal seats during election campaigns - and make much less effort to communicate with voters in safer seats, as far as spending is concerned. to illustrate the point, i created a simple graphic showing the discrepancy in spending. on-diary stories i have a lot of experience of covering the big political events, such as election campaigns, budget statements and party conferences. examples include a preview of labour's general election manifesto launch , going online at 10.30pm the evening before the event. as well as a story i included a breakout box with dates of all the manifesto launches; a chart showing the results of an opinion poll; an on-site poll, nicely illustrated, for readers to vote in, and some background on the rival conservative campaign . key points from labour's manifesto were included in bullet points as well as in the main article text. another example would be an opinion piece on the 2015 budget , which looked at plans for further spending cuts hidden in the small print and went up on the afternoon of the statement. interviews i am an experienced political journalist used to speaking to people at every level in politics, from voters to mps to the prime minister. in this one-to-one interview with labour leader ed miliband he attacked local government funding cuts, pledged labour would tackle low wages and talked about his plans for the tv election debates. i used part of the interview as a standalone story about mr miliband's kitchen after he spoke about that. his kitchen was a big issue at the time! in this interview with david cameron , conducted as part of a round-table with other regional journalists, the conservative leader defended council cuts, said he was committed to helping the poor and said a conservative government would make regional economic growth a priority. i used comments mr cameron made about plans to consult mps before forming any future coalition to create a second story. longer-form analysis long and serious articles don't always do so well online but sometimes they do succeed in provoking debate. the nhs has more money than ever before - so why can't it cope? this article explains why the nhs needs an extra £8 billion a year, according to the head of nhs england. by a nice coincidence, it was published days before the conservatives announced they would make providing this funding part of their general election manifesto. this feature, for birminghampost.co.uk, looked at george osborne's plan for a northern powerhouse and what it means for the west midlands. things i do explainers quirky stories data journalism on-diary stories interviews longer-form analysis connect with me follow @jonwalker121 email me at this email address is being protected from spambots. you need javascript enabled to view it. for personal emails or this email address is being protected from spambots. you need javascript enabled to view it. for press releases. about me jonathan walker political editor of the birmingham post, birmingham mail, sunday mercury, coventry telegraph, newcastle journal, newcastle chronicle and sunday sun. contact me: email [email protected] (but please send press releases to my work email which is [email protected] , as this is the email i monitor during working hours). read my cv all the stories more writing back to top
